So today is my last day of work for a while. Whilst I’m sad I’m also feeling optimistic. I’m confident that with the vaccines etc and the bloody well run company that I work for I’ll have a job to return to in a few weeks/months.
Many others I know cannot say the same. I received an email from a industry colleague from Brains Brewery this morning wishing me farewell. His and ninety other jobs have been lost at the 138 year old Brewer. The name may have been saved but the heart of the business is gone.
I won’t lie it knocked me for 6. This isn’t hospitality’s fault and yet we’ve been treated so badly. Brains were a thriving business not 12 months ago but they’ll go down as a footnote in history another victim of the pandemic like so many others, and I fear there will be others
Hospitality needs more help or the pub as we know it will be gone. Just massive corporate brewers selling bland generic brands,no innovation or experimentation just a one size fits all solution. I for one don’t want to drink nothing but Carling and John Smiths. There is now light
at the end of the tunnel and soon we can go back to meeting friends and living life again. No matter what though , life won’t be the same as we’ve lost a lot of good people, amazing pubs & companies. However I fear the loss of innovation will be felt the most in years to come.
Well that’s turned into a longer tweet than I planned and possibly even a bit of a ramble. Just stay safe and hopefully we’ll be out of this mess before we know it. :)
