This is all charities in general tbh, when it's an unpaid internship they'll always hire young people from the same demographic they claim to help, but as soon as it becomes a paid internship, they add another white person to their already very white employee roster https://twitter.com/sashasaidsum/status/1343979643070722055
I've seen so many charities do VERY performative posts like "We really encourage those from Black, POC, working class, disabled etc backgrounds to apply", but then when it comes to hiring, they just hire another white person.
I would love to see all these organisations who tweet/post about wanting to get applicants from 'diverse' backgrounds do a follow up tweet post hire to say who they've hired... But of course they won't because its all performative
I have so much smoke for charities and their structures.
If you want to get really spicy, why not delve deeper into looking at the charity trustee board. You know, the people who essentially make the final decisions on the direction of the charity and where/how funds are being spent. 9 times out of 10 they're all over 50 and white
Charities cover up their diversity issues by parading their service users, many of whom being Black and POC, on their marketing and comms. Meanwhile their senior management team, trustee board and majority of their staff are white
They may spice it up further by throwing in the odd photo/video of their overworked and underpaid Black/POC staff member for good measure. Just to show how 'diverse' they are. But check in on said staff member in 5 months time and see if they're still working there or happy there
Charities should be held under the same scrutiny as corporates and brands for their diversity and inclusion issues. Most of the times these charities are built on white saviour complexes and are a breeding ground for discriminatory practices.
Anyways, enough smoke for now. I'll be back soon with next weeks episode of 'The Charity sector is made up of big fat phonies'
