2. The reason we now have an “SA strain” (actually a variant) is because *we were able to discover that the virus has mutated*. The other countries have not reported any mutations simply because they don’t do sequencing to the extent we do. They just don’t know. We do. And UK.

3. This is why any mutations that are reported are either only UK or SA variants. The US CDC has only now committed to START doing regular sequencing, and I’m sure others will follow. The UK knows this, which is why they started by praising SA’s research prowess in this area.

4. UK are still colonialists & falsely claimed that the SA variant is more transmissible & drives THEIR 2nd wave. Dr Mkhize corrected this saying the new SA variant is more transmissible than the original, but there’s NO proof that it’s more transmissible than the 2nd UK variant/
5. Why is SA a leader? The legacy of HIV research. UKZN is @ the forefront of not just HIV research but all viral conditions. This “SA COVID strain” is proof, just not acknowledged +ly. We’re being punished for being pathfinders, 1 of 2 countries to 1st confirm COVID has mutated.
