A thread about virtual/remote/online learning. This will be written up into a blog soon...
Firstly decide on your platform and stick with it. Make it clear about what itâs capabilities are and ensure youâve put as much training/support as possible for staff. Allocate a representative(s) to be the main point(s) of contact for this platform to streamline help/queries...
Ensure the platform has the functionality to include parents/carers. Can they check the instructions? See the task? Platforms such as Google Classroom/ Seesaw/ Show my Homework/ And other internal intranet systems allow for this...
Teachers should have clear parameters as to what adequate home learning tasks are. It should be fundamentally clear that like in a lesson you wouldnât have a task without any potential scaffolding or support so the same

Students can be given a copy of the PowerPoint and resource sheet. Which they can work on and submit. They can ask questions/teachers can leave comments and they can submit and have their work returned with feedback... ensure teachers know what this means...

Do NOT assume everybody will simply be able to access online learning. Love lessons etc. There are tons of reasons why thereâs a digital divide in this pandemic. Whatever the reasons find out where this divide is. Have you asked parents/carers?
Have you asked how many digital devices can connect to the internet at home, without a data cap? How many people will need access to a device and the internet in the day? If so, what happens to the ones without the device?
Booklets and work packs work well for this. Textbooks. Revision guides. Workbooks. Knowledge organiser booklets. Are just some ways students can continue their directed learning without any use of a computer. Whatâs your provision?
Then what about students with high needs? EHCPs? Have they been allocated a keyworker? A personal check in person? Do they know how to provide live on the phone support? Do they have access to their students lessons? Tasks?
What about âmore ableâ students? How will they be stretched? We have a scholars challenged embedded into all lessons. Itâs vital that these principles continue along with for example laying out work even if it is being done online....
I have also set up a separate Google Classroom per year group for allocated More Able students where I post generic stretch and challenge tasks. Keep in touch with them and check in. This goes hand in hand with...
The pastoral check ins. Ie tutors. There live tutor sessions. Check ins. Knowing where students are etc. And where to ask generic questions and have communications explained for parents/carers further.
Do you have a digital learning policy? Do parents/carers know what to expect? Students? Feedback policy adjusted? Do you need a policy? Is there reference points on your website?
We have a central link on our website linking to additional resources.
Such as Hegarty Maths. My Maths. Kerboodle. Seneca. Reading lists. Etc. We are also compiling subject specific video clips on how to revise and what that looks like for students currently.

What laptop provision have you been allocated? Have these been allocated? Did you apply for the @Vodaphone4 sim card scheme? Have these been designated? Have you used your PP fund? Service child fund? LAC/SGo child fund?
Handing out laptops/chrome books etc need to be checked for compatibility? And students understanding of their use. Thatâs vital. Have teachers got clarity on the parameters of the platform compared to the handed out devices.

Overall ensure like the Google classroom link there are key people responsible. And responsibilities explained. As RSL I lead on several areas and curriculum link DHT does too. Working as a team like we do is amazing.
One last idea- I think @chrisdysonHT originated it- @OakNational being on free view channel would eradicate a lot of digital divides.
