And yet we all know that a vaccine works precisely by triggering the immune system through exposure, just as it would when responding to infection

Even the New York Times recognised that natural immunity is powerful with Covid-19, which is not in the least bit surprising. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/17/health/coronavirus-immunity.html
And as I said in September, the @BMJ_Open has already reported on a promising study suggesting that 20-50% of people *with no previous exposure to Covid* appeared to already have T-cell immunity from this virus.
