The Solanki of Gujarat

Solanki dynasty ruled parts of Gujarat btwn 950-1300 CE. They also known as the Chalukyas of Gujarat.

Solanki’s reign marked the start of most glorious period in history of Gujarat. Their capital Anhilwara (Patan) was one of the largest cities in India.
During their reign Gujarat was major centre of trade & the culture flowered as manifested in art, architecture, language and script. It is described as the golden period of Gujarat.

The famous rulers of Solanki dynasty were Bhima 1, Jayasimha and kumarapala.
Bhima I was the most important ruler. He built Sun Temple, of Modhera. His wife Udaymati built the Rani ki vav in his memory. The guardian family deity of the Solanki was Somnath.

During his rule the scared shrine was attacked by Mahmud of Ghazni.
Another famous ruler was Kumarapala. His reign lasted for 31 years from 1143 to 1174 CE. He propogated Jainism during his rule in Gujarat. He rebuilt Somnath temple. During Kumarapala’s reign, Gujarat’s prosperity was at its peak.
