A Character Analysis on why Xerxes break is one of my favourite ani/manga characters.
Xerxes Break, is a character trapped in the past. His regrets the past, his goals are in past, even a part of his body is in the past. Hatter (a character in AIW who he is based on) is a character trapped in 6:00 clock (Because he hurt 'time' or something)
Break is unable to ever move forward, because as a character he’s always consumed by regrets of the past. He makes this mistake once when he kills many people for the sake of changing time to bring his master’s family back. .
What he seeks is not to move on, but rather to undo the fact that something bad every happened to him. He wants to repeat the past rather than undo the existence of his regrets
He even loses his ability to look at the present and future by losing his ability to see. He constantly races against the clock on his chest. Even physically, Break is unable to age.
When his master asks him to protect her, rather than stay by her side and support her as the only member of his family left, he instead chooses to go out into the streets and murder people in her name. He always chooses to love people from distance than get close.
By choosing to protect his master in past rather than the one in the present, he brings forth the worst possible result.
He always tries to sacrifice himself in some grand gesture of atonement, rather than simply trying to live with the family he has now.
Ironically, regret is what causes him to sacrifice himself to protect others while also giving him a reason to keep living. He is a very conflicted character. He keeps finding reasons to live and reasons to die.
It was nice touch by Jun to end Break's character in front of clock tower.
Only in the end does he realize that he was just finding excuses to keep living, that he wants to truly keep living. But, by then, it's too late.
Break realized how much he needed the future only when his own future ran out, but he was at least able to make Vincent look towards the future. In the end, no matter how much he looked back, he only managed to change the future.
His entire character arc is about moving forward. Realize that there are people who care about you. Trying to get solace in regret is just going to add more burden on you.
