BREAKING—Oxford-AstraZeneca #COVID19 vaccine just approved for use in UK. Moreover, the vaccine campaign will now shift to giving as many people as possible their first dose—aim will be to give as many vulnerable people some protection. 🧵 https://www.bbc.com/news/health-55280671
2) The decision is based on advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.

A spokesperson said: "The priority should be to give as many people in at-risk groups their first dose, rather than providing the required two doses in as short a time as possible.
3) “the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine will lead to a significant increase in vaccination as it is cheap and easy to mass produce.” — it is about 8-10x cheaper than the Pfizer / BioNTech or the Modern vaccines, and does not require freezing, just refrigeration.
4) regarding the one dose strategy—lEveryone will still receive their second dose and this will be within 12 weeks of their first. The second dose completes the course and is important for longer term protection."
5) Oxford should have been approved sooner. It was also the first to peer review PUBLISH their results - before even Moderna or Pfizer / BioNTech! https://twitter.com/drericding/status/1336720851165728770
