Medhatithi called upon Agnidev and illuminated the Agni for yagya in the traditional way. Here Medha means knowledge. Whatever difficulties and vices exist in your intelligence can be nullified only by pure Knowledge received through enlightenment.

It is said that As per tradition, Medhatithi who had called upon Agnidev to ignite the Yagya. In the same tradition, the मुमुक्षु(Seekers of Moksha), bhakts or the sorrowful want to seek true Knowledge, are calling upon Parmatma to attain their wish.

यम॒ग्निं मेध्या॑तिथिः॒ कण्व॑ ई॒ध ऋ॒तादधि॑ ।
तस्य॒ प्रेषो॑ दीदियु॒स्तमि॒मा ऋच॒स्तम॒ग्निं व॑र्धयामसि ॥

Translation :

मेध्यातिथिः - The priest of Yagya.

कण्वः - Rishi Kanva.

ऋतात् - To Surya.

अधि - To bring.

यम् अग्निम् - For Agni.

ईधे - To illuminate.

तस्य - Whom.

इषः - Wandering rays.

प्र दीदियुः - Luminous.

तम् - For him.

इमाः - This.

ऋच - Vedic verse.

Explanation : The fire which Rishi Kanva and Medhatithi illuminated is still burning. These flames are enlightened by the vedic Richas and our strotras make them more intense.
