Had a call this morning with people in Canada, South Africa, France and Germany, and honestly New Zealand I cannot emphasise enough how different our lives are right now compared to the rest of the world, how fortunate we are and how much we have to be grateful for rn. [Rant 🧵]
The UK has more people in hospital with COVID than ever, they are out of capacity and having to move people >100kms to the nearest hospital that can take them https://twitter.com/sbattrawden/status/1343652707937243137
UK hospitals, esp in North London, have literally no ability to provide ***any care at all.***

Not just for COVID, for ANYTHING. They are completely and utterly overwhelmed (hat tip @SiouxsieW) https://twitter.com/DrEmilyGrossman/status/1343922163590590464
Hospitals in LA are running out of oxygen because COVID patients require so much, and having to ***turn all ambulances away.***

Read that again: hospitals are literally saying, "Sorry, ambulances, you're going to have to go somewhere else" https://twitter.com/kierafeldman/status/1343995305398657024
This is the context that fills me with fury when I hear the naysayers, hindsighters, opposition parties and Plan B-ers trying to pick holes in our response. Come on, people! There's a full-on war out there and we're living in Pleasantville.
I truly, deeply feel for people in those countries that are doing it hard right now. I'm not trying to show off or rub anything in anyone's nose. My only wish is for us to get through this, globally, as quickly as we can and with as little damage as possible.
And I'm not blind or insensitive to the challenges we have here. I know our response hasn't been perfect, that it exacerbated existing inequity, that we still have to deal with racism, climate change, the housing crisis. I'm absolutely here for the fight to make things better.
But, far out. If you went to any holiday parties. Went shopping at the mall. Enjoyed Christmas dinner with friends and family. Went on a roadie for the break with virtually no restrictions.

👏Every👏one👏of👏those👏things👏is a luxury we have in NZ rn that others do not have.
Please remember how absolutely awful it could have been.

🧼Wash your hands
📱Use the app
🤧Stay home if you're sick

And let's not take what we have for granted.

[End rant, with thanks to @SiouxsieW @XTOTL @jacindaardern @AshBloomfield etc etc]
Sorry not done. This hospital in LA is putting PATIENTS IN THE GIFT SHOP.

We're acting like it's no big deal because in NZ it's not a big deal because we dealt with it. It's a huge deal, and it's not over. Stop clamoring to open the borders https://twitter.com/lapublichealth/status/1343971963467825152?s=19
