Vaccinating incarcerated ppl in the first wave is the right thing to do on every level: morally, practically, and justly. 1/
The constitution prevents cruel and unusual punishment (such as preventable exposure to a deadly virus). 2/
Prisoners do not have a choice where they are housed and are not able to properly distance in the current conditions. 3/
The outbreaks in prisons and jails are fed by and are fueling the outbreaks in the community, in a vicious cycle. 4/
And incarcerated people have an exponentially higher risk of infection (over one third and probably will hit half the state prison population in CA). 5/
I was proud to participate in vaccinating some of my patients today, but we need a plan to include all incarcerated people as soon as possible. 6/
Thank you to everyone who is working to shed light on this issue, one of the moral imperatives of our time. 7/7 @MarshallProj @jamesking0314 @akhan1437 @briewsf @AmendatUCSF
