The tradition of dessiminating folk wisdom through poetry is an age-old practice in India. One well known peasant poets of #Hindi speaking world in this tradition is the 16th century farmer-poet "Ghāgh" घाघ of Kannauj, India. A thread on his poems on "healthy lifestyle" - 1/n
प्रातकाल खटिया ते उठि कै पिअइ तुरन्ते पानी।
कबहूँ घर में बैद ना अइहैं, बात घाघ के जानी।
prātkāl khaṭiyā te uṭhi kai piaï turante pānī.
kab_hūm̐ ghar meṃ baid nā aïhaiṃ, bāt ghāgh ke jānī.
(Gist - Drink water early in the morning to stay healthy.) 2/n
खाई कै मूतै सूतै बाऊँ
काहे के बैद बसावे गाऊँ।
khāī kai mūtai sūtai bāūm̐
kāhe ke baid basāve gāūm̐.
(Gist - Urinating after having meals, & sleeping on your left side, keeps you healthy.) 3/n
रहै निरोगी जो कम खाए
बिगरै काम न जो गम खाए।
rahai nirogī jo kam khāe
bigrai kām na jo gam khāe.
(Gist - one who eats less, and wories less over failed works, stays healthy.) 4/n
चैते गुड़ बैसाखे तेल, जेठ क पन्थ असाढ़ क बेल।
सावन साग न भादों दही, क्वार करेला कातिक मही।
अगहन जीरा पूसे धना, माघे मिसरी फागुन चना।
ई बारह जो देह बचाय, वा क घर बैद कबौं न जाय।

sāvan sāg na bhādoṃ dahī, kvār karelā kātik mahī.

Avoid Jaggery in Caitra (late February, early March), oily food in Baisākh (April & early May), &
Bel (wood apple) juice in Aṣāḍh (July), leafy vegetables in Sāwan (rainy season), youghurt in Bhādon (August)...7/n
Avoid Karelā (bitter melon) in Kwār (late September), buttermilk in Kārtik (early winter), cumin in Aghan (late spring), coriander in Pauṣ (winter), crystal sugar in Māgh (early winter) & canā (gram) during phāgun (early February).8/n
सावन हर्रे भादों चीत, क्वार मास गुड़ खायउ मीत।
कातिक मूली, अगहन तेल, पूस में करै दूध से मेल।
माघ मास घिउ खिचरी खाय, फागुन उठि के प्रात नहाय।
चैत मास में नीम बेसहनी, बैसाखे में खाय जड़हनी।
जेठ मास जो दिन में सोवै, ओकर जर असाढ़ मे रोवै। 9/n
sāvan harre bhādoṃ cīt, kvār mās gur̤ khāyaü mīt.
kātik mūlī, ag_han tel, pūs meṃ karai dūdh se mel.
māgh mās ghiu khicrī khāy, phāgun uṭhi ke prāt nahāy.
cait mās meṃ nīm beshanī, baisākhe meṃ khāy jar̤hanī.

This poem discusses what to eat for a healthy living - Harar̥ (Myrobalan) in rainy season, hot spices in bhādon (August), Jaggery in Kwār (late September), Raddish in Kārtik (early winter), Oily food in Aghan (late spring) , and Milk in the the winter.....11/n
Eat Khichri with Ghee in Māgh (Jan - Feb), take morning showers in Phāgun (spring); chew Neem leaves in Chaitra (April - May), eat rice in Vaishākh (March -April), Those who take a nap in the afternoon in Jeṭh (May - June), they stay away from illnesses in Aṣāṛh (July) 12/End
