so for today’s Procrastination Project™, i decided to make a bunch of maps detailing the demographics of maryland. they’re not a full picture, but i hope they can give some insight into the state’s makeup.

as you can see, generally more people live around the DC/Baltimore corridor in the center of the state, with counties nearby generally functioning as exurbs. the eastern shore and western panhandle are both very empty, rural areas.
so, who are the people in these counties? here we can look at race, age, and education. eventually, i’ll probably make a full precinct-level voting data map.
so another very similar story here - the DC-Baltimore area is younger, more educated, and more diverse than the rural eastern and western parts of the state, and the exurbs are a transition in between.
finally, how much money do they have? how does this compare to the cost of living in counties, and how bad is the poverty there?
though this again shows a rural/urban divide, we should also note that baltimore city is really quite impoverished too, while the surrounding suburbs tell a very different story. it’s the people in the exurbs who have the most money accessible, and DC is the most expensive area.
i might do a more in depth analysis of some of these areas but i, too, have to figure out a couple things - like why queen anne’s county behaves somewhat differently from the rest of the eastern shore.
that’s all the maps i have for now, but let me know if you have any questions or ideas for other maps i could make! all data came from the US Census Bureau and was complied by yours truly.
