Being @AACNursing is seeking feedback on the essentials, let us discuss the diversity, equity & inclusion portion of the document. This portion is weak and falls in line with too many statements from orgs that give lip service without tangible action plans. 1/
"Diversity, equity and inclusion - as a value - supports nursing workforce development to prepare graduates who contribute to the improvement of access and care quality for underrepresented and medically underserved populations." (AACN, 2019) 2/
BIPOC account for 37% of the population yet the nursing profession is 78% white. "10% of nursing faculty are members of racial/ethnic minority groups, and fewer occupy positions of leadership." (Smiley RA, Lauer P, Bienemy C, et al, 2018) What we are doing is not working! 3/
Increasing the number of BIPOC faculty must occur at a rapid pace as representation matters! Especially when we continue to see whose gaining admission to nursing education. Overwhelmingly its white women. WHY IS THAT?! 4/
How many of us remember being the only or 1 of x single digit BIPOC during nursing school? Having additional BIPOC faculty would increase advocating for minorities to be accepted in larger numbers, because currently what is happening is not enough. 5/
If a school has 30 spots, 15 should be for BIPOC! No exceptions because the talent is there. For every yt student accepted there needs to be the same number of BIPOC. The mental linguistics of finding reasons why BIPOC do not measure up are laced in racism. 6/
"Diverse and inclusive environments allow examination of any implicit or explicit biases which can undermine efforts to enhance diversity, equity and inclusion." (AACN, 2020) Please tell the class how this will be achieved with the status quo and no plan of action displayed? 7/
"Finally, all nurses must learn to engage in ongoing personal development towards understanding their own conscious and unconscious biases." (AACN, 2020) Call a spade a spade. Nurses must learn to be anti racist daily. There must be serious consequences otherwise. 8/
Too many patients are dying as a result of racism in nursing. SON need to enforce zero tolerance. Nurses should have steps to take when employers will not reprimand/terminate unsafe racist nurses. BON must begin protecting the public by suspending/revoking licenses. 9/
Perhaps when real consequences are on the line nurses will take the steps to deconstruct their racism and do the work to overcome. The time for weak DEI is gone. Lives are on the line. As my friend @NursePatMacRN stated new seats at the table are needed! RIGHT NOW! #NurseTwitter
