(THREAD OF STARDEW VALLEY TIPS FOR BEGINNERS)
1) FISHING. Fishing is a way to make money quickly without having to wait or buy extra equipment. In your first week, you'll receive a fishing rod. Spend every day by the ocean and sell your fish to Willy.
2) Making friends! Make friends with NPCs other than marriage candidates. They'll send you recipes and presents in the mail. Best ones to befriend in my opinion are: Lewis, Pam, Linus, and Clint
3) Know what villagers like as gifts! Giving gifts is an easy way to build or break friendships. Experiment and find which gifts are best. Hint: coffee is universal like (for everyone except Jasmine and Vincent) and costs 300g at the saloon.
4) In the beginning, sell everything you come across EXCEPT wood, hardwood, stone, ore, coal, seeds, batteries, and fiber. Save them for crafting
5) Going off 4, be sure to check and see what is needed in the community center. Finishing the bundles will make life much easier in the future.
6) Make sure to look around EVERYWHERE. You'll run into places that you didn't even know existed! Make sure you know: Beach, Mountains, Mines, southern forest, and locations of all the NPCs houses. Check the map to see where you are and what you haven't seen yet.
7) Watch TV every day! Especially days when the Queen of Sauce or Living off the Land is running. You'll learn lots of tips and recipes!
8) Foraging can make you a lot of money at the beginning of the game. Focus your efforts on fishing, but if you come across any forageable goods, sell them!
9) You'll level up your skills and you can choose talents that will each have benefits.
10) Things you'll someday be able to change later: your appearance, talents from leveling up, children, breed of pet you have. Things you won't be able to change: gender, what kind of farm you have, what kind of pet you adopt (cat or dog)
11) Befriend Linus (3 hearts) and he'll give you a sashimi recipie. Sashimi sells for 75g and requires 1 fish (any type.) For low-selling fish, make it into sashimi and sell it. (Carp, Anchovy, Herring, Sardine, sunfish, bream, etc.)
12) SPRINKLERS. Sprinklers make life SO much easier. It takes a lot of materials but it'll be worth it. You'll get the recipes for making sprinklers by leveling up in farming
13) PROFITS FROM METAL BARS: You'll receive a 20g profit from crafting copper bars. 55g from iron bars. But -640g from gold bars.
14) You’ll have to get your house upgraded by Robin if you want to get married. You’ll need wood, stone, and money to make that happen.
15) Get your tools upgraded! You’ll need metal bars and money. Depending on what you’re focusing on in your farm, you’ll have different priorities for which to craft first, but I’d recommend upgrading your pickaxe first, your ax second, and watering can third
16) Preserves Jars are probably one of the best things you can use. Put produce in there because it doubles the value. (2 x base fruit price + 50g = value of preserved goods) Takes 2-3 days to produce. Choose the artisan profession (level 10 farming) to get 40% more!
17) Best crops for profit
Spring: Kale or potatoes
Summer: Blueberries or tomatoes
Fall: Artichoke, pumpkins, or cranberries
(You'll get new seeds later in the game: look out for strawberry seeds, rhubarb seeds, and starfruit seeds)
18) Worst crops for profit: Coffee beans, tulips, sunflowers. Tulips can be used to befriend Evelyn and sunflowers can be used to befriend Haley, but besides that, they're not worth your time
19a) Easiest presents for marriage candidates...
Shane and Sam: pizza (600g at saloon)
Abigal: amethyst (mining)
Sebastian: sashimi (cooking) or frozen tears (mining)
Harvey: Coffee (300g at saloon)
Leah: Salad (220g at saloon)
Maru: Cauliflower or gold bar
(continued)
19b)
Emily: amethyst (mining) or wool. Likes daffodils
Penny: Emeralds (mining) or melons. Likes dandelions and leeks
ONES THAT ARE HARDER
Alex: eggs (liked not loved)
Elliott: all fruit except salmonberry (liked not loved)
Haley: Daffodil (liked not loved)
20) When wanting to store things like preserve jars, cheese presses, furnaces, etc, you may consider buying a shed. DON'T. A shed costs 300 wood+15000g and only has 67 spaces. Store your things in an empty barn instead, which is 350 wood+150 stone+600g and has 90 spaces
21) It's possible to find really cool things in the garbage outside people's houses. Sometimes there's nothing, sometimes there's just garbage, but sometimes you'll find profit! Just make sure no one sees you: their opinion of you will fall if they catch you
22) For animals: when they have more hearts, they'll produce higher quality products. To get more hearts: milk them daily (if applies), pet them, make sure they're fed, let them outside once in a while (on sunny, non-winter days) and have a heater in the barn during the winter
23) Consider letting Robin build a stable for you when you have the materials (100 hardwood, 5 iron bars, and 10,000g) You'll get a horse that'll allow you to go 30% faster (and even faster if you drink coffee before riding)
24) Hardwood isn't easy to come by, but here's where you can find some: large stumps (need copper axe) large logs (need steel axe). You'll get more hardwood if you choose the lumberjack profession in foraging (need to have chosen the level 5 forester profession previously!)
25a) You can have children once you are married and have upgraded the house twice. Your spouse asks if you want to have/adopt a baby, depending if you're in an opposite or same sex marriage. If you're a girl married to a man: pregnancy does not affect gameplay.
25b) If you're a man married to a woman: your wife doesn't appear pregnant. Children really don't have a lot of impact on the game: no effect on finances or relationships. They never grow older than toddler age. You have no choice over the kid's gender.
26) Going to sleep at 6:10AM is a poor financial decision but if you want to go back to multiple times to skip to a certain day, no judgement
27) Keep in mind what days the shops are closed! Marnie's shop isn't operating on Mondays or Tuesdays. Robin's shop isn't operating on Tuesdays. Pierre's shop is closed on Wednesday. Willy's shop is closed on Saturday. Plan accordingly!
28a) Geodes...sell them or break them? It depends. Geodes are worth 50g, and breaking them costs 25g. You have a 1/32 chance of finding a mineral, 1/12 chance of finding copper or silver ore/coal, and 1/8 chance of finding stone. Could be a 75g gain or a 73g lost. Your choice
28b) It's more complicated than that, of course. Some minerals are worth 100g, some 150g, some 25g, etc. This only applies for regular geodes: there are also frozen geodes (100g), magma geodes (150g), and omni geodes (0g). ALWAYS break omni geodes
29) Give artifacts to Gunther! Some items you find will have the description of "Gunther can tell you more about this artifact" or something like that. When you donate 60 items, you'll get a key. Plus, donating items will get you rewards, so it's worth your time!
30) When you see this spot in the ground (found in dirt and sand) use a hoe to dig it up. There's a chance you can find an artifact to give to gunther or to sell
