My husband’s grandfather passed away this morning, of covid-19. He was a Cuban immigrant who came here “the right way,” in which he first was punished with prison labor in the sugar cane fields for two years before being able to come through US immigration.
He stayed home during the entire pandemic. The entire time. He wore a mask when the nurse came to his house to give him dialysis, washed his hands frequently, etc. He was vulnerable, and he was careful. They’re not sure how he got it, since his FIL went to work.
While people continue to downplay this pandemic, he did not get to say goodbye to his family. He was probably scared as the ambulance took him to the hospital. He was probably scared not knowing if it was the last time he would see his daughter. This was entirely preventable.
The worst part: he lived in Miami, in the absolute worst place in Florida for covid cases. Coincidentally, it has a ridiculously high population of Trump supporters. We all know there’s an overlap.
How is it that so many people support someone who lets them die?

My husband keeps saying that he knew he would die eventually, but he didn’t deserve to catch covid, or die alone in the hospital. There are now hundreds of thousands just like him, who don’t deserve this.
