This bloke is full of let farming die, grow meat in vats, no conservationist can support sheep grazing, anti deer stalking. While some places could be woodland and change is needed this bloke might have other agendas.
Problem with all this stuff it has so many agendas and is so absolutist. So the Peak district is ecologically degraded (don’t @ me, no idea if it is or not, probably is) that does not mean every upland is.
@Alexander_Lees made good suggestions how grazing can change, swept aside as this guy wants farming and livestock gone, that agenda is not conservation or biodiversity based.
That is the problem it is the equivalent of the strip miner, the intensive farmer, the commercial shoot keeper, all alike, their way and bugger anything else. None have interest in a mix of issues, in complexity.
They adopt any argument that gives them what they want, co-opt anything. Offer investment, jobs a panacea of nature which fixes everything. Biodiversity which exists on ancient sites resulting from millennia of management will not be alright if we leave it.
nearly 70 million people makes this a not trivial problem, we need larger sites, more natural dynamics, connectivity, management, I get that it is frustrating and as such tempting to think it can all be fixed in an easy way, it can not, not with numbers of people and scale of
human activity, this fantasy stuff is doing no good at all, just making actual conservation harder. Support sheep grazing on chalk grassland and cattle on ancient grassland it supports biodiversity.
These polemics that people create play out well on social media and sell a few books, maybe get you on TV. They achieve nothing, in elections the environment gets little mention, it plays to an echo chamber. Real substantive change is possible, it will not be done by these people
Anything which ignores the potential to restore and conserve complex diverse habitats, ignores rhos, chalk down, heath, which simplifies complexity and difficulty, which ignores economics and politics is just self indulgent bollocks.
It makes an echo chamber happy, after all they hear what they believe and feel vindicated and right. Nature fantasy cosplay instead of conservation.
