Thread: Over the past 24 hours there’s been people accusing me of theft of some kind because of the GoFundMe I started after my house fire. I’m going to address this one time. When I suffered the fire immediately people started sending me funds to help. At that point
I didn’t know what my insurance would cover. I halted the fundraising because I didn’t want people to donate to me if everything would be covered by insurance. The next day, after the dust settled and I contacted my insurance company I realize my personal property
coverage was only $10k. The house and everything in it was a total loss. Literally everything down to the forks and spoons and dish towels - my family of four had nothing. Even if the structure is covered (it obviously is) I swallowed my pride and started a GoFundMe with
a target of $50k to replace everything my family owned. I was HUMBLED by the response. I raised well in excess of the $50k goal. I shared this GoFundMe one time. I tweeted it once.
People are now saying that because I had insurance I stole the GoFundMe money from all of you - calling me a grifter and all manner of other things. In the interest of transparency I am sharing my policy here now for all of you so that you can see I was (and always do)
telling the truth about my coverage. I want to thank everyone who donated to my fundraiser or sent me a note of thanks. It means the world to me and I can’t ever repay you. It’s sad that there are such nasty people in this world who do nothing more than exist to tear
