Our control over our carbon footprint determines if we face a reasonable future or a catastrophe. Despite being a global issue, the devil is in the detail. Santa gave me a voucher for a kettle to save the climate. Easy? No! Total nightmare 😬 #ClimateAction #EnergyTransition
So I decided what normal non-CO2 kettle features to go for: capacity, looks & no plastic. I assumed kitchen appliance makers with a good reputation for reliability would be the obvious choice e.g. Dualit who make indestructable toasters. Then I started reading reviews - oh dear
Actually it turns out even a £140 kettle can break irreparably in the 1st year & 1 in 10 will break in the first 6 years. Thanks @WhichUK but they fail to remind you you can buy a kettle with no breakable electrics: a stove top with a whistle on the spout https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/kettles/article/top-kettle-brands-aKCUC9s1znQZ
A stove top kettle must works on an induction hob, in case the great #EnergyTransition screws up with #Hydrogen and gas is killed off. Induction hobs are mega efficient. But I use 𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙡𝙮 green biogas (10%), with 90% offset. A fudge, I admit https://www.goodenergy.co.uk/our-energy/carbon-neutral-gas
"Overboil time" is how long the kettle keeps boiling for until it switches itself off. The hob kettle obviously needs switching off manually when it starts whistling & the apparently small extra time to come to the boil could be a sign of lower efficiency for the hob kettle???
The clincher is the simplicity of the hob kettle - it ain't ever gonna break. You would have to throw it under a steam roller. Sadly no ultra cool Alessi kettle is induction-ready so I chose a Judge JQ04. Its built-in emissions are lower than any Dualit & it'll last forever.
The point being, who would go through this for every purchase, apart from obsessive compulsive climate-neurotics like myself? Obviously nobody, but producers could make it a whole lot easier for normal people by sticking the info on the product label. https://carbonwatchdog.org/
