For this thread we will be looking at their production and impact in the 2019-20 Regular Season and Playoffs, to compare the 2 players on a "head to head" scale, because the current season is way too small of a sample size.
First let's look at the box score, for this we will be using "Per 75 Possessions" to give the 2 an even playing field:
Joker:
23.1 - 11.3 - 8.1
52.8 FG% - 31.4 3P% - 81.7 FT% - 60.5 TS%
Embiid:
28.3 - 14.3 - 3.7
47.7 FG% - 33.1 3P% - 80.7 FT% - 59.0 TS%
Joker:
23.1 - 11.3 - 8.1
52.8 FG% - 31.4 3P% - 81.7 FT% - 60.5 TS%
Embiid:
28.3 - 14.3 - 3.7
47.7 FG% - 33.1 3P% - 80.7 FT% - 59.0 TS%
What this gives us is that Embiid is the better scorer, having better volume on slightly worse efficiency, and the better rebounder, however the playmaking gap is huge, here's how their Box Creation numbers look:
Joker: 10.5
Embiid: 6.5
Passer Rating:
Joker: 9.2
Embiid: 3.7
Joker: 10.5
Embiid: 6.5
Passer Rating:
Joker: 9.2
Embiid: 3.7
This should come to nobody's surprise as everyone knows just how good of a passer Jokic is, what you may not know is just how much this playmaking impacts a team's offense.
The Nuggets ORTG improved +5.32 when Jokic was on the floor, ranking 2nd in the NBA with, 18th without.
The Nuggets ORTG improved +5.32 when Jokic was on the floor, ranking 2nd in the NBA with, 18th without.
The 76ers ORTG however, dropped from 112.94 to 110.28 with Joel Embiid on the floor, a -2.66 differential, this can likely be attributed to his "black-hole" ish offense, where he produced just 1 assist for every 6.53 "True Shooting Attempts", about even with 2018 Klay Thompson.
Then of course there's the other end of basketball, the defensive end, where Joel excels in comparison to Nikola Jokic. Neither are very great shot blockers but Embiid improves his teams defense greatly when on the floor, improving from a 112.28 DRTG to a 107.27 DRTG, +5.01 diff.
The Denver nuggets however, improved defensively with Jokic off the floor, from a 112.77 DRTG to 111.85 DRTG. Jokic is not known for his defensive prowess but rather as the league's best offensive center, so these numbers do reflect the narrative surrounding him on defense.
Now let's look at the playoff box scores (Per 75 Possessions):
Joker (19 Games):
25.6 - 10.3 - 6.0
51.9 FG% - 42.9 3P% - 83.5 FT% - 61.4 TS%
Embiid (4 Games):
31.3 - 12.8 - 1.3
45.9 FG% - 25.0 3P% - 81.4 FT% - 60.0 TS%
Joker (19 Games):
25.6 - 10.3 - 6.0
51.9 FG% - 42.9 3P% - 83.5 FT% - 61.4 TS%
Embiid (4 Games):
31.3 - 12.8 - 1.3
45.9 FG% - 25.0 3P% - 81.4 FT% - 60.0 TS%
Obviously Jokic has the much bigger sample size but these numbers display the same things as the Regular Season, except for Embiid becoming even MORE of a playmaking blackhole, now at 19.99 True Shooting Attempts per Assist, a number so bad, only 1962 Wilt Chamberlain is higher.
Now let's dive into the impact metrics:
Jokic / Embiid
PIPM: 3.6 / 2.9
Backpicks BPM: 6.1 / 3.1
On-off: 11.1 / 7.3
RPM: 6.0 / 3.8
RAPTOR: 5.0 / 4.1
Through these we can see what their true impact as players is, Jokic's being significantly higher by all measures.
