Yes yes, having a bigger number is good. Everyone wants big number go up. Great. But does having a lot of followers actually help you achieve your end goal?
One of my end goals is to have a dedicated following when I stream. I think a lot of us share that same goal, right?

What's the point of having a ton of followers if none of them care about you? You could go and buy 10,000 followers and then pat yourself on the back, but that doesn't get you ANY closer to your goals.

In the beginning, having followers are important because it means people will start seeing your tweets. Once you have that baseline of a few hundred people, it's way more important to focus on nurturing relationships with your existing followers. Make friends!
Having followers IS important. You're allowed to be proud about your numbers! I just hit 1,400 and I'm thrilled!
BUT! I also understand that that's not THE most important metric. I'm way more proud that I'm friends with so many of you. I'm proud that we have that connection.

TL;DR, I'd rather have 200 engaged friends instead of 10,000 followers who don't care about me. Hyperfocusing on increasing your follower count without nurturing your existing followers isn't going to help you get more successful.
ADDENUM
Looking solely at follower count also hurts you mentally. How often have you looked at accounts with thousands more followers than you with envy? How often have you beaten yourself up when you see a new account grow faster than yours?
It's unhealthy!

It's hard to break out of that mindset, honestly, but it's honestly made my time here much less stressful. It doesn't matter how big other Vtubers' number is. Instead, focus on how you can make your channel and your social media profile better.
