THREAD: The most annoying comment I see is the ‘lazy teachers want kids at home because it is easier’ argument. As someone who has had to remote teach since September, it is far harder than having students in front of you. It is exhausting and I don’t mind admitting I have cried.
Teachers are arguing for schools to go back later because this virus is not under control. We want things to be safe for students, their families (try talking to a student who upset a family member has died and they might have infected them) and for staff faces with classes of 30
We want all students in school again. We can do this if we attempt to stop this virus spreading and have a testing process that hasn’t been cobbled together quickly because then it won’t be robust. Then we might be able to actually do what we want to do - teach.
Some schools have exam students that have been out for 6 weeks already. That’s a whole half term. It’s the going in and out that has been the most stressful and upsetting for them. We don’t want this for them. We want them in school so we can see the smiles on exam results day.
Teaching remotely/blended learning means we have had to adapt, to do things many different ways in each hour lesson. It is exhausting. I have more students than ever who message me at 10 at night, who want to do their best and I reply. But all I ever get called is lazy. Enough.
So basically what I am trying to say is that delaying schools going back isn’t extra holiday. We’ll be there, teaching those students at home alongside those in school, as we’ve done all along. The point is to try and get some sort of control of the virus so normality can return.
