this discourse is people conflating different two meanings of protect
by "protect children" they mean "youre not allowed to post adult things on your 18+ account" and when folk are like "no thats dumb" it becomes "oh so if a child was dying in front of you you'd just watch???"

it sounds like im exaggerating but im not. thats literally the argument. it's so secondhand embarassing
notice the loaded language around "children," too. these conversations are usually about teens because theyre actually allowed on socmed, but pearlclutchers use deceptive language that frames seventeen year olds as small children. note the "baby" metaphor above
when you say "children" most people picture seven year olds, not seventeen year olds, and that is absolutely intentional
there is an entire grand canyon of distance between "watching an unsupervised baby crack its head on the pavement" and "posting clearly marked smutfic on your personal twitter" and if they had any real arguments they wouldnt hide behind something so silly
