What an interesting chess match going on in the senate right now over the proposed hike in emergency COVID payments to hard-strapped Americans, with @realDonaldTrump & Dems for the additional aid; @senatemajldr and many Rs on the other.
The move by @SenSanders to hold up the must-pass defense authorization bill unless McConnell agrees to a floor vote on the $2K COVID stipends puts the majority leader in a bind. His caucus is divided, and Trump’s 11th hour play makes it even more complicated.
If the bill hits the floor it could pass. How do GA senators, foe example, vote against enhanced aid when Trump, who is due there Monday to campaign for them, is FOR it?
McConnell is the wiliest of chess players so who knows how this lands? One thing’s for sure: He must be fuming at Trump’s 11th hour intervention-which is probably a big part of why Trump intervened-furious that Mitch recognized the electoral college results.
