Somehow I missed this memo last week, but I am pretty bummed out to read that @ReadOctober is shutting down at the end of the year. Sending my best to the editorial team there, and the freelancers who relied on that gig. https://oct.co/essays/note-our-readers
Because of its connections to ABI it never really gained a foothold with a lot of established beer writers, so it was kind of estranged from the beer writing scene, despite often putting out some great features that were of little or no benefit to its investors.
It's owners, Condé Naste, will, like all mainstream publishers no doubt avoid further investment in beer coverage in the same vein in the future. This is devastating. As a publisher of an independent beer-focused magazine, things are fucking tough. Readerships are small.
That in a market of 10's of thousands of breweries and a burgeoning beer culture worldwide the amount of specialist coverage is shrinking should be a huge worry. I am worried!
Basically, support the beer publications you love, or you will lose them for good. We run @pelliclemag thanks to our Patreon supporters without who we couldn't keep the lights on. Here's the link: http://patreon.com/pelliclemag
I was happy to work with October as a photographer once, the only time I did. Shooting Chef Josh Habiger in Nashville. That was a fun afternoon. Thanks to @SarahIsChi for the opportunity. https://oct.co/essays/beer-nashville-hot-chicken-chef-josh-habiger
