Lizzie le Blond was born into a wealthy family, the Hawkins-Whitsheds, in 1860. She grew up in #Greystones, Co. #Wicklow.
As a young woman, Lizzie spent time in #Switzerland, where she became fascinated by both #mountaineering & #photography. #IrishWomenInHistory

Photos of her climbing the Alps in voluminous skirts became famous. Apparently, Lizzie actually wore trousers for the arduous climbs, but as it was considered shocking for #women (especially "well-bred" ones) to wear "men's clothing" she changed into her skirts for the photos

At that time, almost no #women climbed mountains, partly because their clothing was unsuitable for the task.
In 1907, Lizzie formed & became the president of the Ladies' Alpine Club.

She wrote 7 #books on #mountainclimbing & over her lifetime made 20 first ascents, which means that she climbed peaks that no human being had climbed before. She climbed in #Lapland & #Norway as well as in the European #Alps, despite suffering from a serious lung condition.

Lizzie was also an early #filmmaker -- one of the very first #woman film makers, & indeed one of the first film makers focusing on #nature in general. Her films were praised for their technical excellence & innovative content. #FilmTwitter #IrishWomenInHistory #NollaigNamBan

As a #photographer, she pioneered several techniques for the photography of snow-covered landscapes. Many of her #photographs were sold or given to raise funds for #charity.

Lizzie published her #autobiography Day In, Day Out in 1928, & also wrote in other genres.
Lizzie's work was, obviously, greatly facilitated by her wealth. She had a private income, owned a lot of land, & could afford to fund her mountaineering & film-making herself. #Writer

However, she still had to deal with a society that felt #women had no business exerting themselves physically, or wearing clothing that facilitated movement. #Greystones library has a collection of her #photographs.
