/5 Embargo period over, my conceptual paper proposing PPC mechanism which influences decision-making and motivation by distorting action values (published 2019 in @EJNeuroscience) is now available open access as preprint (accepted manuscript). https://psyarxiv.com/8bd49/
/5 In short: increased probability of grasping objects which are within arm's reach (i.e. controllable objects processed by dorsal stream in PPC) increases expected value of actions to grasp them (basic neuroeconomics), and so invigorates grasping.
/5 Applying this process to concepts (embodied cognition): the near-miss outcome/illusion of control in gambling and drug availability/cue exposure in substance addiction cause the relevant reward to be misperceived as 'within reach' or controllable, and so invigorate behaviour.
/5 This distorting process is automatically enhanced in response to the intention to control/minimise negative somatic representations in the insula, and reduced by the intention to surrender (learned for example in mindfulness-based therapies for addiction).
/5 Because our sense of self is rooted in the perception of control, the same mechanism can create an illusory sense of self (aka 'narrative self' or 'ego’), and be used to explain the endowment effect and enhance our understanding of ‘enlightenment’ experience.
