Random observations about my writing and writing process just for fun and sharing:
I get stuck on playlists. If I have productive writing days with certain music on in the background, I get superstitious and I don't change it until I'm finished with the project.
I use "we," "us," and "ours" in my papers. I do it because I want to invite the reader in. It's me saying, "Hey, let's think about this together, you and me." I've been told that it assumes cultural hegemony, but I want it to signal common humanity.
My number one distraction is staring out my window. I can stare out my window for a long time, just letting my mind wander. But I can't write in places where there are no windows.
I have a very hard time getting started on a paper if I don't at least have some vague sense of where it's going. It doesn't have to be solid or static, but I need to have something that looks like a plan.
I experiment a lot. I don't have one strategy that works for every paper. Each paper materializes in its own way.
I need long blocks of time to write. Those "write 30 minutes a day" things? Nope, not for me. I need at least two hours to really get anything done. It's a concentration thing, I think. I need to feel immersed.
