A THREAD: Dispelling the myth that Antoine Griezmann was carried by the likes of Mbappe and Pogba at the 2018 World Cup
Let's start where the tournament ended: the final

Many people, mainly United fans, claim Pogba won the MOTM award in the final. In fact, it was Griezmann who won the official MOTM award

His free kick led to the opener before he grabbed a goal of his own
Griezmann won the Bronze Ball, the award for the 3rd best player of the tournament. The winner was Croatian, and the runner-up Belgian, making him officially France's best player
Griezmann recorded 6 G/As throughout the tournament, averaging a goal or assist every 95 minutes

Only Kane recorded as many G/As and no one averaged a better minutes per G/A ratio
The knockout stage is really where Griezmann came alive, scoring 3 and assisting twice at a rate of a G/A every 71 minutes

No one else managed 5 G/As in the knockout stage and only Pele has bettered that figure at the 1958 World Cup
To put Griezmann's G/As into perspective, that's more than Messi and Ronaldo have achieved put together in a combined 8 tournaments
No one recorded more assists throughout the tournament than Antoine Griezmann, and only Harry Kane scored more
He recorded at least one goal contribution in EVERY knockout game, against the difficult outsets of Argentina, Uruguay, Belgium and Croatia

Take away his contributions and France don't win any of their knockout games
In conclusion, it's ridiculous to think ANYONE carried Griezmann. He was 100% France's best player of the tournament and really made the team tick

If Griezmann didn't play, France wouldn't be World Champions
