Taylor Heinicke played pretty well in relief of Dwayne Haskins on Sunday. 1st throw was a checkdown, here’s the 2nd. Can see the anticipation but also lack of velocity. Makes the throw before his receiver breaks but the ball is contested. Could have had Thomas on the over route
3rd down, Washington calls a corner-flat combo to the right with Thomas spotting up over the ball and a post backside. Panthers have Tre Boston rotating down into Cover 3 buzz. Corner-flat combo wiped out, Boston buzzes Thomas. Heinicke keeps and runs for a 1st
Would love to see Heinicke hold onto this one for a second more to find the deep dig over the middle from Cam Sims to his left. Instead, checks it down to Steven Sims in the flat.
This was a really nice throw from Heinicke. Haskins missed two open seam routes earlier in the game. This one is tougher than the two Haskins missed, but he layered the throw nicely over the underneath defender and found Thomas before the deep defender could get there
This was an outstanding throw by Heinicke. Panthers send a blitz with an LB & S joining the rush, but Heinicke sees the safety coming from deep & knows he has time. As soon as the slot breaks outside, he knows he can hit the post behind the deep safety. Cam Sims has to catch this
Next throw was the right read, but poor execution by Heinicke. Has Steven Sims up the seam, but sails the throw. Very fortunate not to be intercepted, but was unlucky not to have a TD on the previous play
3rd and 10, Panthers come with another LB + S blitz, this time off the right side. Pressure comes quick, but Heinicke does really well to throw over the rush and find Gibson in the flat to get to 4th and manageable
Missed opportunity here in the red zone. Heinicke works to his right, but both Cam Sims and Steven Sims came open to his left. Tried to scramble to extend the play but ended up sacked
Miscommunication here. Cam Sims spots, but Heinicke expected him to run the post. Might well have been a TD if they were on the same page. Logan Thomas’ reaction suggests perhaps Sims got the route wrong.
4th down. Heinicke really deserved to get a TD out of this drive. Nothing on, scrambled to his left, makes a tough throw back across the field to find Thomas for the TD, but wiped out by a holding penalty
Heinicke’s 2nd drive was just as solid as his 1st. 1st play, chains concept. Panthers use a sim pressure look with C3 behind it. Heinicke hits Sims in the slot for a 1st down.
This was another really nice throw down the field by Heinicke. 4 verts concept. Spots the safety biting up on the checkdown underneath and throws it over him. Logan Thomas can’t quite pull it in
Next play, 3rd and 10. Panthers get quick pressure off the edge vs Moses at RT. Heinicke does well to avoid the sack and escape the pocket to his right. Could potentially have hit Thomas after that, but ran for the 1st down instead. Solid play
Final play - another sail concept. Panthers cover it well, Heinicke looks to the dig on the back side, covered too. Feels some pressure, drops back and spots McKissic working down the sideline on the scramble drill. Beautiful throw, gets the TD he deserved on the 1st drive.
