I, honestly, didn’t know much on this topic, but after some research, the expulsions were a result of the escalation of the Civil War and the members had already stopped showing up.

The members were removed as a result of escalating tensions during the Civil War. They, honestly, weren’t showing up anyway and essentially left them vacant, so this was more of a formality than anything.

The expulsions happened on July 4th, 1861, but were followed by 4 more expulsions for aiding the Confederacy.

The reason it took until July was because Congress was hoping relations were going to cool down. By July, tensions were escalating and there was no other recourse, but to expel them formally.
Most of the other Southern members of Congress had already resigned in protest.

They are officially listed on the Senate website as expelled for:
“Support for the Confederate rebellion.”
“Support for the Confederate rebellion.”
The 3 members of the House were expelled for taking up arms against the United States Army with one serving as a Brigadier General.

This is all true and applicable to what is happening right now. We have a party attempting to literally overthrow a free, fair and democratic election. It’s sedition at best and treason at worst. Many of those contesting the election are contesting their OWN election.
