So they became aware of the Black lead as non-human trope AFTER THE TRAILER CAME OUT. THEY DO NOT EVEN KNOW ABOUT THEIR OWN GENRE.
"At least half the film" I... just...
"But at this point the lead character wasn't Black" THIS IS NOT A BLACK MOVIE YA'LL!!! They literally switch up the marketing to get us to watch this bullshit. I cannot.
So once again - they brought in Black creators to the WRITING PROCESS after they already wrote the GD movie.
But give Bradford Young his flowers because the visuals were on point.
If you have to bring in consultants to ensure you don't include offensive tropes about Black people in your movie... YOU SHOULD NOT BE WRITING OR DIRECTING A MOVIE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE.
SPOILERS AFTER THIS POINT. You have been warned. There are so many anti-Black messages in #Soul. Its disturbing to even contemplate writing about it but I'll start here.
They had a Black Man realize his life long dream and then give it his life to a WW (and yes I know its a "soul" - but said soul literally chose to be a WW to annoy people so... issa WW) #Soul THIS IS FUCKED UP.
Why did said WW after being placed in a Black body (because yes that was the case for MOST of the movie) become a "better Black man" than the ACTUAL BLACK MAN? That barbershop scene was beautiful but it broke me to hear the barber basically say he liked the WW better. #Soul
I hate the "lesson" about teaching. Teachers are human beings - they deserve to live full fucking lives. Teach AND pursue their dreams. This movie presented this as an either or and its trash. #Soul
They had a Black Man CHOOSE to die & leave his Mama ALL ALONE in service & sacrifice to a white Woman. That actually happened "I can't go all the way with you, but I'll go as far as I can" what in the magical negro bullshit is that!? #Soul
I have more but i'll pause for now on this. When said WW becomes a "lost soul" and is being tormented by "something" over & over... SHE IS BEING TORMENTED BY A GIANT ANGRY YELLING SCARY BLACK MAN. This bitch ran away with this mans body but SHE'S the victim. FOH #Soul
