The disastrous situation of Eritrean refugees in UNHCR camps in Tigray. At the start of the Tigray war on 4 November they numbered 96,000 - all registered with the UN
No-one know how many remain. It seems that some were killed in fighting, some fled to Gondar and Addis Ababa (and some forcibly returned by the Ethiopian government) and some were returned to Eritrea - again by force
Of the four camps the UN has only been able to reach the two most southern camps. A convoy of 18 trucks delivered some 250MT of corn soya blend, grains, pulses and vegetable oil to local humanitarian partners for distribution to 13,000 Eritrean refugees in Mai Ayni camp.
Additional 240MT of food were delivered to Adi Harush refugee camps to benefit 12,170 refugees.
The UN has been unable to reach Shimelba camp - with 8,702 Eritrean refugees or Hitsats, with 25,248. These are closest to Eritrea and the refugees have most likely been forcibly returned to Eritrea - their fate unknown.
The UN is doing what it can to reach the camps and continues to engage with the Ethiopian government, but it urgently needs the backing of the UN Security Council so that it is allowed to undertake its mission.
