When I was listening to 7th sense, I felt something weird with the song, and when I tried to search any informations on internet, the source didn’t do any justice at all. It’s not wrong to call it a D major song, but I think when you hear their vocals, it’s not a D major song...
So I tried to transcribe it. And it’s not a D major song, like my wild guess. It’s a
polytonal
song with a little bit of
polyrhythm
. Here is a universal sign why I called it polytonal tho. The bass line with two sharps and vocals in three sharps.

How I can call it polytonal? Over a bass which is constantly playing in D major key, an accidental genius line by Taeyong went to G# in “ijeuneun open your eyes,” to make it clear that NCT didn’t sing in the same key with the music.
(A brief definition of poly-tonal is a piece/song that use more than one key signature at the same time).
Why I can’t feel the polytonality? Because D major and A major is pretty close in circle of fifth. That makes the song doesn’t sound like a polytonal song at all...

There are studies about Lydian Augmented scale, or “Super Lydian” that Jacob Collier ever talked about in his interview and masterclass video, that super lydian is just a concept scale of circle fifth that goes up, like this song. Musicians, let’s discuss more if you see this.
Also some subtle 3:2 polyrhythms, that members made with each other, makes me love this song even more. Doyoung and Mark are hidden geniuses in this category.
There are some question and answer patterns here and there too, as a contrapuntal responses of the main melody. It’s not a real counterpoint piece, it’s just hiphop, but it’s safe to say that it’s inspired from Baroque era, while everything in here went individually..
What amazes me as a 2nd gen kpop stan who knows exactly the characteristics of each companies, that this is a thing that probably SM never did before. Usual SM would throw you some weird chord progressions or exotic scales, but not polytonal hiphop song..
People should talk about this song more than now, because it’s easier to make a hard song and sounds intellectually hard than make a hard song but doesn’t sound like it’s a song that you should analyze in the first place. This is one of the coolest song that ever existed in Kpop.
It’s time for hashtags, so nctzens will hop in this thread!
