In his youth, Brandt played in his hometown at SC Borgfeld and then at FC Oberneuland before he joined the youth academy of VfL Wolfsburg.
In January 2014, Brandt moved to Bayer Leverkusen during the January transfer window for a fee of €350,000, where he signed a professional contract until 2019. He made his professional debut on 15 February 2014 in the Bundesliga against Schalke 04.
Brandt was Dortmund's transfer target after the 23-year-old scored seven league goals, provided eleven assists and subsequently helped Leverkusen to finish fourth in Bundesliga and secure a Champions League third qualifying round spot for next season.
On 22 May 2019, Brandt completed a transfer to Borussia Dortmund on a five-year deal for a reported €25 million after Dortmund activated a release clause in his contract.
He has 55 appearances with Germany across all levels and has won the silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics, the under 19 championship in 2014 and the confederations cup in 2017.
While Julian prefers to play behind the striker as a 10, he can also play as an attacking 8, a free 8 in a double pivot and also on the left wing.
This season, Julian has not hit the ground running. With only one goal and one assist in 22 outings with BVB. As per transfermarkt. It is worth noting that we was not being used well and was subbed on several times.
While comparing him with the current midfielders at Arsenal. He leads the way by a long distance.(via @TheArsenalog)
Comparing Julian with another similar player that was linked to Arsenal, Houssem Aouar. He seems to come out on top.
More detailed stats actually show how good he is.
1.1 key passes per 90
0.9 dribbles per 90
Is fouled 0.4 times P90
And makes only 1 bad control P90
Please bear in mind that these stats are in one of the worst seasons in his playing career.

In my humble opinion, I think that Brandt will have an instant impact as he plays in one of the most similar leagues and also is a very technical player. Dortmund might sell for around 25 million due to his bad performances.
