I thought I'd put up these hashtags and get them out of the way.
In the last couple of days I have been hit with more lunatics. Bill Gates, apparently, is a eugenicist, racist, and all round evil genius.
The main theory here is that Gates is planning to kill off billions in a swift campaign. There is no Covid-19. It's an invention (according to them). Gates is using it to create vaccines that will contain nothing beneficial. But they will have nano transmitters.
Woo! Scary stuff.
Gates will personally (presumably) be able to track you, wherever you are, along with the whole of the rest of humanity. And then kill you. Perhaps by a device like those in Kingsman (excellent film, but sadly for the theorists it isn't a documentary).
The motive? Ah, well, he isn't a cuddly fellow - he's set on world domination, I suppose. Motives are less important, because, hey, he's just evil, right?
No, he's not. Bill Gates and the Gates Foundation have spent upwards of $40Bn trying to save lives by making vaccines available across the world.
Consider malaria, pneumonia or diarrhoea. A child in Africa was 40 times more likely to die young from curable diseases than a child in the West. By using partnerships he has helped see a fall in deaths from 10M to 5M children - because of vaccinations mostly (BBC yesterday).
Gates has brokered agreements with pharmaceutical companies to provide medicines and vaccines to the poor in Africa. He is now helping finance a vaccine to counter Covid.
Only, obviously, a very small number of people would deny the existence of Covid. A hoax based on Covid, a lie, claiming that Covid existed when it didn't - well, it's obviously ridiculous.
People have died. I know several who have died of Covid. Most people - not only in the UK and US - will know family, friends or acquaintances who have died or lost loved ones. Then again, to suggest that Covid doesn't exist, because of some grand conspiracy ...
therefore has to suggest that the majority of health service workers around the world are lying to us. The nurses, clinicians, doctors and staff are all lying or incompetent. When they say they daily see people dying, they are deceiving us for their benefit.
But Gates has these nano tech machines that will transmit signals so he will know at all hours where everyone in the world is.
Why? We all carry phones. Phones track us 24 hours a day. The conspiracy theorists are happy to carry them. They are already giving out their locations.
The technology suggested does not exist, of course, in nano terms. No device could be made (today) which could be small enough to be injected invisibly in a vaccine which could perform such a function. There is no battery small enough which could work for any period either.
Besides, if such a device could be made, with a battery that lasted more than a couple of hours (no such tech), consider the logistics. Gates owns no pharmaceutical plants making vaccines that I'm aware of. Even if he did, to create the vaccines we will need many factories.
To make the nano tech (which doesn't exist) he would need many more factories. And then he would have to mingle the devices in the vaccine. How would he insert one nano machine per vaccine shot? How to make sure that the scientists and engineers weren't aware he was doing that?
And when he had managed to get around all those issues, what would be the purpose? Specific nano-tech-seeking missiles to hit every person with a specific number? Remove all the poor? That would have a deleterious effect on farming. Hit all politicians? That appeals more...
So, in short, what would be the motive of Gates or anyone else designing such a major conspiracy? There is no reason. Other than quotations taken out of context, there is no evidence whatsoever.
Basically, this conspiracy is so bizarre, so ridiculous, so lacking in intellectual rigour or logic, it is very hard to see how anyone with a brain could do more than laugh at it. But it's serious. Let's consider another conspiracy theory - I am, after all, a fiction writer.
OK. Let's suppose there was a "power" which wanted to seriously damage the western economy. I won't go into the allegations that the Chinese deliberately created this. Let's just say that Covid struck, and a foreign power sought to take advantage.
Let's say that a vaccine was created, in record time, by companies who were keen to protect their own workers, their own friends and neighbours. And the foreign power could see that the vaccine might soon bring about the renewal of the western economies.
That foreign power might seek to affect the take up of that vaccine. How? Well, by using black propaganda, lies, to make people scared of using the vaccine. That would work well. If they could create fear, uncertainty and doubt in the minds of the population to be vaccinated...
that would help achieve their aims. So are these weird conspiracy theories created by a foreign malign power; invented just to put people off accepting the vaccines? After all, in order to work, a significant proportion of the population must receive the vaccine.
I have no idea. But I can say this: it is infinitely more likely that someone made up this silly conspiracy theory to stop people taking a vaccine that will help protect them, their loved ones and the rest of society.
Because let's make no bones about it. The world's most generous philanthropist becoming a world domination-crazed mass murderer is not likely. But true evil is creating and disseminating a lie to stop people agreeing to be vaccinated.
Yes. Whoever thought up these lies - and those who keep promoting it - are the truly evil ones in this story.
