Since it's 5 in the am i'm gonna take a rural girl hot take (don't bash, just constructively criticize)- ACAB is very bad messaging; the intent of it is good, but when you phrase it literally All Cops Are Bastards, people on the right are going to take that phrase and run (1/8)
with it. These vague phrases- ACAB, Defund the Police, etc. are harmful. Yes, you might go into detail later about how it's the whole system and it's not meant to be directed at all individual cops, but I think when most rural ppl absorb information they look (2/8)
less at the fine details and more at the the big words that stand out. When republicans throw out "socialist" accusations it's meant to fear-monger because the overwhelming perception of what socialism is in rural voters is that it's bad. And see with ACAB, rural voters (3/8)
right off the bat know what to think about the issue. There is a small police station in every different little town here and most ppl I know are related to an officer that works in one. It will only make them antagonized when they hear those phrases because they're more (4/8)
in touch with their predominantly white community and not with the horrific experiences and deaths black people have known. Rural ppl are going to be more open to change and more empathetic when u don't target their people while advocating for yours. I definitely know I (5/8)
would rather stand in solidarity with black ppl, than the police, but in these areas lots aren't familiar w race issues because they don't know many pocs. Although BLM is clearly more important than the feelings of (6/8)
rural people, I personally think that in order to boost racial equity the message we send to ppl in the south and midwest has to have a calmer more nuanced tone so dems have a chance at getting elected. Country folk might be wrong, but u have to use understandable messaging (7/8)
to convert them, not the "my way or the highway" tone. (8/8)
why did i do this
