As a result of Brexit Northern Ireland will follow EU rules for goods, citizens will be eligible to work in the EU, and study and receive healthcare in the EU. Its MPs will vote against the Brexit deal. It now seems on a different trajectory to the rest of the UK. Next steps? https://twitter.com/nealerichmond/status/1343709302884855809
The other part of the UK whose MPs will predominantly reject the Brexit deal? Scotland. Again. Where all eyes on the next six months. Where the election there next year is let's face it an independence election.
Bringing us neatly back to Brexit realities and myths, in which the result for Scottish fishing fleets is a classic example. Betrayed according to representative organisations and the SNP. Opportunity cries the English media. Which will be believed?
And for the country as a whole I just see the continuation of two Brexit narratives, the government one of triumph over the EU and the increasing march of global UK, opposed by one that says that this is nothing like the promises. And I don't yet see them reconciling.
A house divided. What I'm not sure about is whether leading Conservatives and their supporters are basically happy as long as they can win 50% of English and Wesh votes, or whether they really want to see reconciliation across the UK. Different views I think.
At some stage I hope some of the Brexit supporting political thinkers join a realistic discussion on what this all means for the UK, rather than just sticking closely to their side, blaming the EU / SNP, and wondering why not everyone comes to their side. We can hope...
