1867 map of Westchester County, NY. It includes The Bronx, which would be annexed to New York City (and NY County) in 1874 (West Bronx) and 1895 (East Bronx). At first part of NY County, Bronx became its own county in 1914.
West Bronx included the Towns of West Farms, Morrisania, and Kingsbridge. East Bronx included the Towns of Eastchester, Westchester and Pelham, as well as the Villages of Wakefield and Williamsbridge.
Queens County was split in the 1898 consolidation. The eastern towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay formed the new county of Nassau while the western towns (Newtown, Long Island City, Flushing, Jamaica) stayed as Queens County and formed the Borough of Queens.
One of the main reasons offered to support consolidation in the 1890s was fear that Chicago would surpass New York as the biggest city in the country. New York and Brooklyn were #1 and #3 at the time.
