Really fun to see all the Tesla twitter "India experts" many of whom have either no idea or have a prejudiced notion of India as some 3rd world country with people who burn wood to cook food , has terrible power infrastructure blah blah. The truth is far from that.A rant follows:
Also no, not every vehicle in India is a rickshaw. Kia and Hyundai amongst themselves sold only 2 models e.i. Seltos and Creata more than 160,000 in 2019 ($18,000 to 22,000$). With the low cost of running and maintenance the $25,000 Tesla can capture a significant portion.
Luxury car sales of Mercedes, Audi, BMW and Jaguar total upto 40,000 to 50,000 cars per year in sales. These cars are heavily taxed with 28% GST plus surcharges and around 20% road tax. A Model 3/Y at $75,000 will still be at the lower end of the spectrum compared to these.
Plus EVs are taxed at 5% GST and most states have 'zero' road tax. All these will make it attractive. Above all this the Tesla brand has an unimaginable recall value with the youth. All this and an ever increasingly reliable grid makes me feel bullish wrt Tesla India in automotive
But that's not where Tesla will see the maximum demand. With India focussing so much on wind and solar generation, grid scale megapack demand will be insane. I see this contribute more than 50% of the topline for Tesla India.
All in all I hope the Tesla 'India' experts do some basic research and not form opinions based on preconceived notions from 2 what they think is India of the last century. Ok done. Thanks
