When US public school finally reopens it will be a different public school. There will be some permanent loss of upper and middle income kids, which will further erode the schools ability to do what it alone does-- improve the opportunity gap
Given the fact that school kids are at far lower risk of complications & death from covid than adults, that they are less likely to contribute to spread, and that their educational sacrifice will impact their health & well being, US decisions are particularly foolish
Not to mention private school and day care remained open as did western europe, &, and the demands of teachers unions were incredible, which paradoxically, obliterate their long term interests (i.e. less future kids in their system & public confidence they use rational judgement)
