Thread on protecting yourself late at night without carrying a gun. This is all just stuff I’ve heard or done myself. I am not a professional.
Self-defense tools:
Stun gun
Taser
Tactical pen
Those stabby tabby keychains.
Holding your keys in a balled up fist so they stick out like wolverine.
Kobutan keychain.
I recommend Damsel in Defense and can hook you up with the woman I purchased from. https://damselindefense.net

If they pull a gun and you are far enough to run from them, zig zag pattern.
It’s better to fight, get injured, and get away than to be taken to a secondary location.
Remember SING to fight back: solar plexus, instep, nose, and groin

If your attacker pins you down, go ahead and spread your legs... so you can wrap them tightly around their waist at your earliest convenience. This will help you gain some control over them and reduce the amount of force they can exert. You may be able to roll on top, and hit ‘em
If you don’t remember or can’t do these in the moment, it’s not your fault.
If you don’t mind changing how you present when you’re walking late at night, do that. Large hoodie, shoes that would be considered “unisex”, nondescript backpack instead of a purse, baggy (or at least not fitted) pants. This was my uniform for late nights at the library.
The way we dress has nothing to do with whether or we not we deserve to be attacked or hypothetically want to be attacked. However, if you’re preparing for a late night in advance, taking steps to reduce your chances of being targeted by some misogynistic predator is optional.
If you need help, scream “fire” instead. People are more likely to respond to that because they are more likely to believe they can help. Fires are an emergency, so someone is likely to report it, even if they don’t come to help themselves.
Speaking of fire, if you have access to a fire extinguisher, don’t be afraid to unload it on an attacker or armed assailant. The contents will make them unable to breathe, and may injure or kill them. They will definitely be incapacitated.
If you’re alone and you think you’re being followed, walk into a business, if you can. Call a ride if you can, or a friend or so to walk with you if possible. Some schools have safe walk, I never used it, because they were strangers and laypeople too, but it’s not inherently bad.
If you have the opportunity to let potential attackers know you know what they look like, take it. Give a compliment about a defining feature. (Eg: “bro, nice snake tattoo.”) what you say should translate to “you may not mean me any harm, but I could pick you out in a lineup.”
That’s all I could think of off the top of my head. If anyone has more #SelfDefense tips that aren’t meat-headery sponsored by the NRA, please feel free to add them!
