let’s talk about metaphysical skepticism, transphobia, and the impact these things have on trans life -

the most common form of transphobia i’ve encountered as a trans person is the idea that for whatever reason, trans people aren’t actually the gender they say they are
this is called metaphysical skepticism (...)
this is called metaphysical skepticism (...)
people who think this way are likely to believe that trans people, & therefore transphobia, don’t actually exist
this puts trans people in the impossible position of proving their own existence
i could go on about why this is incorrect but i want to focus on its effects (...)

so i have about 4-5 years of full service restaurant experience under my belt and (before transitioning) was starting to think this may be my “career”
but of course even settling for this career path was never actually an option for me, bc of metaphysical skepticism (...)

i could talk about getting fired from a job (i was promoted 3 times at) for bringing up discrim happening to a trans coworker (before i started hrt) but instead i’m going to talk about my life afterward

after losing my only income, i moved a couple cities away (cheap rent) and started applying for jobs.
i didn’t realize how impossible this would be for me after starting hrt/presenting “woman” @ interviews
i applied every day, had experience, & interviewed 5+ times a month (...)

i have not ended up getting a job at a restaurant again btw
i gave up after a year of that, got a job @ sb*x i was very overqualified for, and recently i’ve given that up as well due to covid
i don’t think i will ever have another public-facing job and tbh i don’t want one (...)

during that stressful year of interviews i could tell a lot of these people interviewing me saw me as a “man pretending to be a woman”
no one took me seriously, implied the job was too hard for me, that guests were mean
& i bet ppl less qualified than me got those jobs

i hear the metaphysical skeptics thinking “well just stop pretending to be a woman” and that is to say that as a woman, i don’t exist
this is... incorrect. but bc of this thought, when i stopped pretending to be my assigned gender i started getting denied my right to live (...)

i would not be alive if it weren’t for my friends & family’s support and while this makes me feel pathetic it’s a privilege many trans ppl don’t have
there are trans women less fortunate than me who have not lived to tell their story because someone with power to end it did (...)

i’m positive that there are well meaning bosses, managers, interviewers, who have, in part, taken trans lives away by denying them jobs due to their own metaphysical skepticism/internal bias

in conclusion-
trans women are women
trans men are men
non binary ppl are neither or both
& our lives/existence is not a debate
fact is, we exist, & “facts don’t care about your feelings” (/end)
