Media seems not very excited to get the word out, but as I suspected last night, it looks like Trump's 24-hour signing delay *won't* result in people losing a week of unemployment benefits. I think it's important to step back and see what happened here... https://twitter.com/NJLaborDept/status/1343652293951049728
First, if this does bear out, the people who harshly condemned Trump for this over the past three days will have egg on their faces. But instead of admitting that, they will just pretend it never happened, as usual. But there's an even bigger picture here.
When Nancy Pelosi rejected a $2 trillion deal throughout the entire Fall, only to accept a much worse deal months later — which denied people thousands of dollars in benefits that they will never get back — she was almost universally defended & excused by this exact same crowd.
Pelosi herself had no explanation for this when @mkraju asked her about it last week, in what I think deserves the award for question of the year: https://twitter.com/mkraju/status/1340815740543393793
Compare that to what happened here. Trump delayed signing by 24 hours, which looks like it will have no negative effect but will result in a Senate vote on $2,000 checks. That vote has an uphill climb, but if it passes, it would be an incredible financial event for millions.
You can hate or love Trump, but if you have any respect for truth and reality, you have to marvel at the discrepancy in reactions. And as I said, I see very little enthusiasm for reporting this latest development now, probably because it doesn't fit the desired partisan narrative
One note of caution. The reason I suspected this would happen is because the U.S. Department of Labor (which is obviously under Trump's control) issues guidelines on how states implement the relief bill, so they can guide states to pay out the week despite the late signing.
But it's also true that individual states can sometimes vary in how they implement unemployment laws, so there isn't confirmation that this is universal just yet. So far New Jersey (above) and Rhode Island (below) have confirmed no lapse: https://twitter.com/RI_DLT/status/1343644288039743489
Looks like Nevada too: https://twitter.com/ByJonathanNg/status/1343680394051215360
California too: https://twitter.com/StewMama71/status/1343720801397166081
