#HFChitChat i have question for y’all re: genre distinctions. I have been calling my WIP "historical fantasy", as it is an historical setting that has a fantasy element (a folktale turns out to be true)
BUT. 1/3
2/3 several people have assumed recently that it must be a "portal fantasy"—that there’s a time travel element (there isn’t)—and I am trying to figure out if this is a case of that just being a popular trope within historical fantasy
3/3 or if I have missed something in the genre distinction between histfic and histfantasy. Anyone have any thoughts? I am mostly curious what other people consider the tipping point between fiction and fantasy!
