HYDRA is a fictional authoritarian paramilitary-subversive organization bent on world domination appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, founded in ancient times as a cult centered around the fanatical worship of Hive, a powerful Inhuman.
After its defeat at the hands of Captain America in 1945, an Operation Paperclip scientist rebuilds HYDRA from within S.H.I.E.L.D., an American extra-governmental military counter-terrorism and intelligence agency, tasked with maintaining both national and global security.
The name HYDRA is an allusion to the mythical Lernaean Hydra, referencing the myth of the Hydra; "If a head is cut off, two more shall take its place", proclaiming their resilience and growing strength in the face of resistance.
