Not to be angsty but imagine Atsumu in the national team constantly getting clowned by everyone, especially Suna, Sakusa and Yaku. He really doesn't care, but it just...starts becoming annoying at some point, even if he knows his teammates have no cruel intention. He just starts
thinking he is really not that appreciated, not as a setter (he knows he is good and nobody can take this away from him) but as a person. He knows colleagues don't have to get along to work together, but volleyball is a team sport and he thought he could be happy
playing it until he couldn't anymore. But at some point in high school he realized he actually wanted friends, he wanted to have fun with people he cared about and he is sure he cares about his teammates...that's the reason it stings when they male fun of him.
And even if he, theoretically, knows they don't really mean any of it, he can't help but feel a little sad. So sometimes, when he thinks he can't stand it anymore, he goes silent (he never tells anyone the reason why, he doesn't want to ruin the team's rhythm and dynamics)
So he just stands there, quietly goes through practice, a quick shower and then he leaves the gym. Sometimes this happens during training camps, sometimes he doesn't leave his room for a whole day. And his teammates are not actually worried because they see Atsumu is still the
same during practice, he still smiles a smug smile when his spikers make a perfect point out of his tosses. But it's different. Once they go back to their shared room Sakusa asks him if something is wrong, Atsumu shakes his head and then the conversation ends.
The day after Yaku scolds him because he tried to execute a new technique at the end of the last, critical, set. This time Atsumu only nods, then he lowers his gaze and silently goes stretching.
And again when Suna shows him a funny photo of him he has taken during a break,
And again when Suna shows him a funny photo of him he has taken during a break,
Atsumu just purses his lips and smiles faintly, it weird, it's really weird because he's usually would have made some broken verse and try to force Suna to delete it.
It's weird because this time Atsumu stays silent for a week, anf the entirety of the national team has no idea how to deal with it.
Sometimes Atsumu rests his head on Aran's shoulder, sometimes he goes to the gym to do some weightlifting together with Bokuto,

other times he helps Hinata in the kitchen. As if those three are the only people he feels comfortable with.
The week passes and Atsumu is still quiet, but he think he is getting better. Suna, Sakusa and Yaku have stopped making fun of him and are now kind of worried about him

They can't understand why he stopped reacting like he did to their jokes, but they notice they are the people he is most silent around, so they imagine they played a role in this...they feel like they have to fix this, but they are all too proud to say sorry
So they start taking care of Atsumu in their own way. Yaku gives him one of his energy bars, Suna offers him a change of clothes when Atsumu states he has forgotten his at his apartment, Sakusa asks him to watch a movie together once they get back in their room.
Maybe Atsumu is really getting better.
