Wargamification is one of my biggest bugbears in game design and genre development and it continually saddens me to watch genres and whole mediums continually repeat the same mistakes over and over and over again because nerd ego matters more to them than people having fun.
One of the most successful genres of boardgame in history went from massive to all but extinct in like a decade, because they couldn't see past the "hardcore" set and spent all their time catering to an ever smaller number of players until no one was left.
And yet despite reams of paper written on the death of wargaming over the years, somehow generation after generation of game designers since keep making the same mistake, keep listening to the loudest, most toxic, most hyperdemanding among them, and ignoring the rest. Sucks man.
