This is naive take, although seemingly becoming a common one even from Black folks (at least on twitter).
"Nigga" was not appropriated by hip hop. Blaxploitation films used it in the '70s. George Jefferson said it on almost every episode the fist two seasons of the Jeffersons... https://twitter.com/cvaldary/status/1343379830344183813
... my question is, what context is there in which white people NEED to say "nigga"? It's VERY easy to use another word. VERY. Like... incredibly simple to just not say it. My question is why folks feel the need to advocate for white ppl to use it? What do they lose by NOT? https://twitter.com/cvaldary/status/1343382554435575810
Black people using "nigga" among each other is not a rap thing, it's not a hip hop thing, it's not something White folks just discovered Black people doing in the '90s, it's not a fcking trend. Stop acting like it is.
Even as we're fighting for our humanity RIGHT NOW, still, it amazes me how Black folks wanna philosophize as though we're in a post racial era.
It also suggests you've never actually been called a nigga in spite, because this POV would stop *immediately*.
Apparently "compassionate" anti-racism (which in my mind translates to assuaging white guilt) https://twitter.com/thedotp/status/1343647696154992642
Lastly, it's not just a euphemism for "man." Nigga is an all purpose noun. As explained by my favorite @DragonflyJonez tweet. https://twitter.com/dragonflyjonez/status/230107031921643520
THIS is the crux of it, really. https://twitter.com/felixmarques/status/1343648555785986057
Pryor, Redd Fox, Paul Moony, Rudy Ray Moore... a large number of foundational Black comics used it FREELY. Cosby stood apart in part because his act was so clean (the irony). https://twitter.com/nodaysoff85/status/1343649244150902786
If someone did one of those word cloud things for my real life, nigga would be one of the most prominent on there, and I still have never had to explain to my white friends why they can't say it. https://twitter.com/onlyaari/status/1343652723967881218
A bunch of us just watched @MaRaineyFilm, right? August Wilson, TONY & Pulitzer winner, "the theater's poet of Black America," has nigga peppered allllll throughout his dialogue in the Century Series plays. The "but hip hop culture" argument is limited and, frankly, ignorant.
So yeah, her tweets make all the sense now. đź—‘ https://twitter.com/fayeknutsen/status/1343655389523443713
