Why is everyone on the TL forgetting capitalism's core purpose? Self-interest.
The reason why SA is only getting vaccines in Q2 is due to pharmaceutical giants being protected by first world countries. Those countries are refusing to waive intellectual property rights.
The reason why SA is only getting vaccines in Q2 is due to pharmaceutical giants being protected by first world countries. Those countries are refusing to waive intellectual property rights.
This means that we cannot be given permission to manufacture the vaccine and distribute ourselves. Access to health equity denied for the developing world. First world prioritized distribution and profits will always win over our inalienable right to life.
Please stop listening to John Steenhuisen and others who believe that SA is nor prioritizing the vaccine fight. Bilaterally, SA and India have fought for the following: IP, the GAVI COVAX facility & confronting the WTO's defense of first world countries along with MSF. Read up.
In making this argument, I am not defending the SA government for their vaccine planning.
I am pointing out the key lesson of COVID-19 pandemic: inequality is man-made and western countries will use self-interest to protect their national interests ahead of global solidarity.
